Letter from the President

“The transition from the industrial to the digital era is having a
seismic impact on business and society”. As I read the first line of one
of our articles for this month’s edition about how Education Needs a New
Approach
, I took pause. Is the need for this new approach restricted
to education? I would argue not. Many businesses are operating with
antiquated systems but expecting 21st Century results. To paraphrase the
article, “the (businesses) that adjust quickest to this tectonic shift will find themselves propelled up the … value rankings. The converse will be true for those … that remain in a digitally torpid state.” Simply, if you’re not continuously monitoring and moving ahead digitally, you’ll quickly find yourself falling behind. I challenge you as we close out the first month of 2018 to reflect on what’s coming next and how your business fares. We would love to help you evaluate your current systems and plans for the future.

Funding through government contract opportunities may help offset some of the costs for
these new or upgraded solutions and systems. In case you didn’t know, Networking Technologies has been selected as a provider for multiple government and educational contracts including:

  • COSTARS™
  • PEPPM®
  • National Cooperative Purchasing Alliance
  • NYS Office of General Services
  • OCMBoces

To learn more about each of the contracts and our reselling agreements with each of them, visit our
Government Contracts page.

Education Needs a New Approach
The transition from the industrial to the digital era is having
a seismic impact on business and society. Nations that
adjust quickest to this tectonic shift will find themselves
propelled up the global value rankings. The converse will be
true for those nations, developed or developing, that remain
in a digitally torpid state. Education is central to this
transition. It underpins society, as well as determines its
future fortunes. However, the educational requirements for a
digital society are quite different to those of the industrial era. This paper explores where we are with respect to primary and secondary education, along with the actions needed to build an education system that is fit for purpose in the post-industrial world.Read more →

Safety in Schools: The Foundation for
Learning
By Christina Behle
Axis Communications
The core objective of any school is obvious: to provide a safe,
secure, positive environment in which to enhance children’s
learning. Children, teachers, and parents must all feel confident that they are studying, working, and entrusting
their loved ones to an establishment that has the
infrastructure and technology needed to deliver on this
goal. And while a well-equipped school from a teaching
perspective is certainly a significant part of the equation,
video surveillance and related communications technology
also plays a key role.   Read more →

Networking Technologies Employee Highlight of the Month
Joe Kubiak Server Storage Specialist

“Let’s Polka!” These words are music to the ears of Networking
Technologies Server and Support Specialist Joe Kubiak. A fan of a good dark beer and Polish music, it’s not uncommon to see Joe with an accordion in hand on stage with Polka Relations, a local polka band.

While his love of music and his Polish heritage are strong, his love for IT and serving his customers are obvious. After graduating from North East High School (PA), Joe went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh and his MBA from Gannon University.

3PAR & Nimble Storage: Gartner MQs & Critical Capabilities
Take a look at the recent Gartner Critical Capabilities Report
for Solid-State Arrays and see how HPE and Nimble Storage
were scored.

Great things seem to always come in pairs. And this month was no different.

Gartner’s recently published Critical Capabilities (CC) Report for Solid-State Arrays (SSAs) comes at a time SSAs are truly becoming mainstream. Not only are SSAs delivering on the promise of low response times and high performance, but are also proving to be at least as reliable as traditional HDD arrays. Costs have reduced to the point SSAs are easily justifiable for most primary workloads, aided by flash density gains and the broad adoption of data reduction technologies such as inline deduplication and compression. In past posts we’ve highlighted the importance of features
that go “beyond the box” now that we are in this third-wave of flash adoption.ce in leadership, network consulting, technical sales, solutions architecture, cloud services and more.Read more →
4 Ways to Get Started With Information
Governance
used with permission from IBM Big Data & Analytics Hub by Candace McCabe, J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc.

Two paradoxes of information technology are: data has no value if you can’t access it, and it’s a liability if the wrong
people access it. Company leaders don’t think they need data governance until these paradoxes hit them hard.

According to IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, data is the world’s new natural resource. The International Data Corporation (IDC)

forecasts that by 2025 the global datasphere will grow to 163 zettabytes
(or 163 trillion gigabytes).

Community engagement
over social media interaction

Despite the proliferation of smartphones and connected devices, companies are recognizing that social media and virtual connections cannot replace the value of live, in-person interaction with their customers, or the communities they’ve created.
